Haiti:
Vegetable Production & Reforestation Reservoir

TireForestKidsTiresTirePlant

Date of Funding: June 2009

In an isolated area of Haiti, the Association des Travailleurs Paysans de La Ferrière requested the 1% Fund’s assistance in building a reservoir to collect rain water to grow vegetables and tree seedlings. Using a technique popular throughout the country, the farmers split old tires, collected from cities, to use as a base in which to cultivate crops. Once harvested, the produce will in turn provide the community with fresh vegetables at a reasonable cost.

With their grant money, the farmers will be able to procure the necessary resources to construct the reservoir and establish an agricultural system to sustain them for the long-term.
